With so much going on, of course I have to talk a bit about SPP’s Fiction Unboxed getting underway and I finally weigh in on the Amazon/Hachette issue. Then it’s all about the awesome Reading Rainbow Kickstarter blow out and my own memories of the show and reading as a child.
Lots of goings on this week!
- Fiction Unboxed has started delivering on their KickStarter stuff and this is the month they do their novel – first time seeing the Self Publishing Podcast guys on video. It was interesting because the voices don’t match how I pictured them. Also, the first vote.
- Of course the Amazon/Hachette issue. Not enough details of course, but Amazon is a private company – they don’t HAVE to sell any products they don’t want to. So in this regard, they are in the right. To a degree, big publishers brought it on themselves with the attack on Apple. It annoys me, of course, because I had some gift card money and couldn’t buy stuff I wanted, but I am not going to vilify Amazon for doing what they feel is best for their business. Just like Walmart refuses to sell a lot of things – like music with explicit lyrics – their right. The folks who want to be sold there either have to meet their rules or sell elsewhere. Less attention is being paid to another on-going negotiation, with Warner Bros, which is preventing preorders of DVD titles – the only reason I heard about it is because it’s also affecting Viz Media, an anime publisher, who uses Warner for its distribution.
- Reading Rainbow did a KickStarter and OMG so amazing! They blew past their goal of $1 million in less than 12 hours!!! With 31 days to go, they are already at $3 million with a stretch goal of $5 million. Awesome project and totally support it!
- In honor of the Reading Rainbow kick starter, I thought it might be fun to talk about some of my favorite books when I was a kid and the impact the show and similar shows had on me (like Cover to Cover with John Robbins), teacher reading in elementary, mom encouraging reading.
Progress Report: I’ve started writing the new first chapter for Aisuru, so yay. Have the first of it’s three scenes done. I also got the whole story outline set up in Scrivener as chapters/scenes with the summaries from the outline so I have the “road map” in place.
Monthly Goals: Continue revising Aisuru. Start Tome 2 of my novel adaptation project. Get back on pace with TLW episodes!
